Jus Mundi raises one million euros to make international law and arbitration easily accessible and understandable.

Jus Mundi, the search engine specialising in international law and arbitration, has announced the closing of a first seed funding round of one million euros. The legaltech aims to become the world reference for research in international law and arbitration.

Artificial intelligence to make international law and arbitration accessible

Jus Mundi was founded at the end of 2018 by a team of 5 engineers and a lawyer, Jean-Rémi de Maistre, who has represented several governments in international arbitrations. Jean-Rémi realised that artificial intelligence could increase his chances of winning his clients' cases by finding key legal information whatever its language, and by analysing data on the arbitrators ruling on those cases.

The company has built its own technology to collect and structure legal data such as international arbitral awards or treaties between states. The team also uses the most sophisticated machine learning algorithms to handle the diversity and complexity of data coming from around the world. In under a year, this ground-breaking tool has attracted several governments and most of the largest law firms in the world, including DLA Piper, Clifford Chance, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Eversheds Sutherland.

First funding round

Jus Mundi quickly raised one million euros in seed funding from investors in various countries, including the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia as well as France. Among them are the leading French business angel clubs (INSEAD, Seed4Soft and Holnest) along with successful entrepreneurs and business angels, namely Olivier Njamfa (founder of Eptica), Cedric Page and Elie Rotenberg (founders of Millenium.org and Webedia gaming), Stefan Tietze (founder of gebraucht.de) and Kai Hansen (founder of Lieferando).

Jean-Rémi de Maistre, CEO and co-founder of Jus Mundi, says: "Our first goal is to become the leading global resource for research in international law and arbitration, and then to extend into other areas of law. We believe that having international DNA is the key to winning a market that has largely gone global. That is why we chose to approach the market globally from the outset, despite the growing challenges. We want to thank our investors for believing in our vision and in our understanding of the international legal research market."

An international company with global ambitions

To meet that international challenge, Jus Mundi has signed a partnership with a leading academic publisher, Brill | Nijhoff, to distribute the Jus Mundi – Academic Research offering to university libraries around the world. The service is already used by prestigious universities in Europe (Paris La Sorbonne), the United States (Harvard Law School) and Japan (Kyoto University).

More than 12 different nationalities make up the team, which is supported by the Université Paris Dauphine incubator, also present in London.
